Water damage is the “silent threat” to British homes, and a bigger threat to homes than burglary, Legal and General has warned, after a week of torrential rainfall across England and Wales.
With freezing conditions also said to be on the way again this winter, homeowners could see a repeat of last year’s damage which saw more than 370,000 homes affected, at a cost of £730m – double the costs relating to burglaries over the same period.

There is a wealth of case law concerning the extent to which insurers may be entitled to contest the merits of consent judgment settlements in which their policyholders assign their contractual (and extra-contractual) rights against the insurer in return for a covenant not to execute. As many insurers have discovered to their misfortune, moreover, much of this case law is adverse to insurers and often limits their defenses to issues of coverage and claims of fraud and collusion. As a result, insurers very often seek to intervene in the tort case to challenge the amount of the agreed damages and create a detailed factual record to support subsequent claims of fraud and collusion. But may a liability insurer intervene to challenge the verdict itself by picking up its insureds’ abandoned post-trial motions or, if necessary, pursuing an appeal to set aside the excess verdict?
That issue is due to be considered this October by the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts in the matter of Bejarano v. Goldb

The UK Government has declared war on the private motor insurance market.
The Government has yet to decide who the enemy actually is, although one ethnic group CFA referal collectors have been singled out for the death camps and news coming out of Westminster today confirms this.
The call for the War on Car Insurance from the media and consumer led groups has reached deafening proportions recently and the UK Government will tell you they have been forced to act.
The AA have stated that the average car insurance premium has risen by 40% and on the word of the AA and probably as a deflection away from the more pressing economic issues, battle has begun.
First into battle yesterday for the Government, was the consumer watchdog the OFT (Office of Fair Trading).
